Nestled in the mountains of Huehuetenango, Guaisná and its neighboring communities are home to families whose lives are rooted in agriculture, tradition, and resilience.

For many years, continuing beyond primary school meant walking long distances, paying tuition that many families could not afford, or leaving home altogether.

Education wasn't simply difficult to access.

For many children, it wasn't an option.

That began to change in 2020.

BUILDING ON A SHARED VISION

A school that changed the future

Inspired by what had already been accomplished in Cocolá Grande, local families, community leaders, and Café con Causa came together with one shared goal: bring quality education closer to home. In 2020, that vision became reality with the opening of a middle school serving Guaisná and neighboring villages. Today, students who once faced significant barriers to education can continue learning within their own region, giving them new opportunities to pursue higher education, technical careers, and meaningful work without leaving their communities behind. Education became more than a classroom. It became a reason to stay, grow, and build a future at home.

The Guaisná Middle School opened its doors, creating access to quality education for students who previously had few opportunities to continue their studies.

Since opening, hundreds of students from Guaisná and neighboring communities have continued their education closer to home.

Each year represents another generation with greater opportunities.

The school continues to grow as students, families, teachers, and supporters work together to strengthen education across the region.
